Not every morning starts from the same place and anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or has a life I haven't encountered yet. Some mornings you wake up already in it — already light, already ready, already oriented toward the day in a way that feels almost easy.

And then there are the other mornings, the ones that arrive heavy and slightly gray at the edges, where the first decisions you make matter more than they probably should.

On those mornings, without thinking about it very much, my eyes go to the same place they have been going for most of my adult life. To the blue-greens, the colors that live in the apatite and turquoise and freshwater pearl sitting on my table right now as I write this.

They are the same colors I am wearing in headshots taken twenty years apart, the same colors I reach for when I am going to the grocery store or to dinner. I workout in them every week. These are the same colors that have never once let me down when I needed them to do something for me in the morning.

There is a version of this essay where I explain the color theory behind why these particular tones work the way they do against deep brown skin and I am not going to write that version because it is not the interesting part.

The interesting part is the difference between a color you have learned to wear and a color you know without any instruction is yours. That difference is enormous and it lives in the body rather than the mind. These colors don't require me to think about them. They require nothing from me at all except that I put them on and go live my day.

What I can tell you is what these stones actually feel like to be around. Apatite has an intensity that surprises people — it is electric in a way that most blue-greens are not, vivid and present without trying to be. Turquoise is older and more grounded, carrying sky and earth and centuries of being exactly what it is.

Freshwater pearl adds something luminous underneath all of it, a warmth that keeps the whole arrangement from going cold and gives the apatite and turquoise room to do their most vivid work. Together they produce a feeling I can only describe as lightness with conviction — not soft, not retreating, but completely and unhurriedly at ease.

These three stones are the foundation of the Tranquil Fluidity colorway — the first of two colorways that launched the Mosaic Collection, my new ongoing collection built entirely around gemstone combinations that have no obvious reason to work and are extraordinary because they do.

Every piece in the Tranquil Fluidity colorway is one of a kind, which means the specific gathering of apatite and turquoise and pearl that makes each design itself will not be repeated. What is available right now is what exists and when it is gone it will be genuinely gone.

When the stones lift something in you that needed lifting, you've found yours.
